Union Square | Understanding German Wine
March 8 2025 | 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM13 E. 13th Street, New York, NY 10003
Germany is one of the few European countries that puts the grape on the label. Despite this, a history of classifying wines according to ripeness, and now a classification system focused on vineyard quality, has made reading a label of German Wine somewhat like deciphering Dostoevsky's Crime & Punishment.
Our instructor Amber has spent time in many German wine regions, working harvest, exploring, tasting, and importantly chatting with producers about how to best understand and enjoy their wines. She is excited to share this knowledge with you to enhance your understanding and enjoyment!
Riesling is synonymous with Germany, but outside of this acidic, aromatic white wine, Germany offers a bounty of grape varieties ranging from whites like Grauburgunder to reds like Spätburgunder (yes, there are reds too!), and even sparkling Sekt. Come explore this historic cool climate region of Europe. Kabinett, Eiswein, Gutswein, Grosses Gewächs, VDP - we'll discuss all these terms while learning the history, geography, and regions. By the end, you will be able to discuss the range of styles that make this country's wines so diverse and delicious! And if you're concerned all wines will be sweet, they won't be and we'll dispel this myth!
