October 13 2022 | 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM13 E. 13th Street, New York 10003
Please join us on Thursday, October 13th in welcoming César Saldaña, President of the Consejo Regulador for Jerez to Corkbuzz Union Square. Chef Laura Walker will be pairing a special menu to pair with a selection of César's favorite wines.
About César:
César Saldaña was born in Jerez, Spain in 1961. Although closely related to the world of the Sherry bodegas since his very early days, César started working as a firm consultant in Madrid. He returned to Jerez in 1985 to join the Sherry trade, first as an Export Manager at González Byass´ International Division and then at The House of Sandeman as Commercial Director, with marketing and sales responsibilities over both the Sherry and the Port sides of the company.
In 2000 he joined the Consejo Regulador de las Denominación de Origen de los Vinos de Jerez as General Manager and after 20 years in this position he was elected President in October 2020. The Consejo is the official institution of the Sherry wine industry, integrated by more than 1.500 local growers and approximately 100 bodegas (wine shippers). Its functions are numerous, but they can be summarised into three main areas: certification of the DO products, name protection and generic promotion. A key piece of this last function is Sherry education, formally articulated around the so-called “Sherry Academy” program. In his position, César Saldaña spends a significant part of his time lecturing on Sherry wines and Brandy de Jerez, both in Jerez and internationally.
Apart from his position at the Consejo, César Saldaña is a member of some of the Spanish official bodies involved in the promotion, regulation and protection of Spanish quality wines and spirits. He is also General Manager of the Regulating Body for Brandy de Jerez, Spain´s most important spirit drink and President of the “Ruta del Vino del Marco de Jerez”, the association behind the leading destination for wine tourism in Spain, with over 100 members and more than 580.000 visitors in 2019. In 2022 César debuted his long-anticipated book “El Libro De Los Vinos De Jerez”. One of the most comprehensive books published on Sherry to date. To date it is only available in his native Spanish language.
