Chelsea Market | Exploring Terroir: Volcanic Wines
January 29 2025 | 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM75 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10011
How do you like your wines? Today guests often ask us for "interesting" wines, be they smokey, funky, lighter, floral, mineral, etc. Often we reach for a wine from Vesuvius, Etna, Madeira or the Canary Islands, places where volcanic soil lends unique properties to the wines, fermentation might happen vessels made from volcanic stone, and indigenous grapes have a stronghold over international varieties.
The terroir of volcanic wine regions is a fascinating one filled with stimulating stories. Dramatic eruptions from ancient to recent history have shaped the environments of well-known wine regions like Sicily, Madeira, Somlo, Canary Islands, the Pacific Northwest, and more. Sicily’s Mount Etna is the world’s most active volcano and produces complex wines from its surrounding valleys and slopes - with some vines reaching close to 3,000 feet! In this class, we will discuss the history of these regions, the unique soil types and their benefits to viticulture.
