Chelsea Market | Sherry Celebration Tasting - Complimentary Tickets!
October 10 2024 | 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM75 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10011
Unfairly pushed back to the back of Grandma's kitchen cabinet, the popularity of Sherry has ridden the incredible wave of highs and lows. We want to bring Sherry back! This style of wine is incredibly diverse, from light, Marcona almond & chamomile tinged Manzanillas & Finos, nutty Amontillado & Oloroso, floral Moscatel, and unctuous Pedro Ximénez, these wines range in style from bone dry to lusciously sweet and can be enjoyed with tapas, as an aperitif, with dinner and dessert. We'll explore the grapes, vineyards, history, winemaking, styles, and pairings of this historic wine.
To show you the best that Sherry can offer, we're teaming up with three of the top bodegas in Jerez, and some of the regions representatives to walk guests through an intimate discussion and complimentary tasting of Sherry. Featured Bodegas include Valdespino/La Guita, Williams & Humbert, and Gutierrez Colosia.
Valdespino: Jaime Gil (Export Manager)
Bodega Valdespino dates back to 1264 A.D., when Don Alfonso Valdespino, a Christian knight, was rewarded with land in Jerez for his role in reclaiming the city. Officially registered in 1875, Valdespino became a purveyor of Sherry to the Spanish and Swedish Royal Houses. Known for pioneering the use of the term "Sacristia," Valdespino also produces the renowned Fino Inocente, the only Sherry made from a single vineyard (Macharnudo Estate) and fermented in oak barrels, unlike most Sherries. It also stands out for its 10 'Criaderas' stages, rather than the typical 2 or 3.
La Guita: Jaime Gil (Export Manager)
The Hijos de Rainera Pérez Marín Wineries, founded in 1852 in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, are part of the "Marco de Jerez" triangle. Since 2007, they have been part of the Estevez Group, alongside Valdespino and Real Tesoro. Located in a historic building that once served as a hospital, the winery preserves its baroque façade and is known for its iconic Manzanilla, LA GUITA, which is aged within these walls. LA GUITA is the first Manzanilla to include a bottling date on its label and is the market leader in Spain. Responding to growing demand, the winery also produces still wines.
Bodegas Gutierrez Colosia: Patricio Grandes (Export Manager)
History: Juan Carlos Gutiérrez Colosía is heir to a long tradition of ‘Criadores de Vinos de Jerez’ (‘nursering Sherry Wine’).
“Criadores de Vinos” (also called ‘almacenistas’) were those who received the young wine (“mosto”), fortified it and took care of it (‘nursed it’) until it was ready to go to the Expedition Wineries. They were the specialists of ageing Sherry in the tradicional system called ‘Soleras y Criaderas’.
Bearing in mind that Sherry is not Sherry until it has a minimum of ageing and that this ageing requires fortification and constant care for being the wine in direct contact with the air and under the dynamic process of the Solera and Criadera system is obvious that the ‘crianza’ is the most important part of the Sherry Wine and it will not be in the D.O. JEREZ-XERES-SHERRY until the ageing is not completed in the geographic triangle of Sherry.
Furthermore, we can have a PX wine coming from the D.O. Montilla and it will belong to the D.O. Sherry when continues its ageing in the Bodega de Crianza.
Gutiérrez Colosía Bodega was built in 1838 and is located in El Puerto de Santa María right on the shoreline of the Guadalete River and next to the Atlantic Ocean. The dry humid winds from the sea regulate the surrounding humidity maintaining optimun conditions for the wines.
El Puerto de Santa María is the best place for ‘nursering’ fino (‘La ciudad del vino fino’) but due to its fantastic situation in the Bay of Cádiz and its proximity to Cádiz, Jerez, Sanlúcar, its beaches, golf, schools etc has also become probably the best place to live in the area and many wineries have changed to other kind of business more profitable. There were around fifty bodegas and now Gutierrez Colosía is one of the few survivals because of the family passion to their wines. Carmen an Carlota (Juan Carlos’ daughters) are now working in the family business being the 4th generation following the tradition and giving a joung vision of Sherry wines.
William & Humbert: Daniella Sanchez (Brand Ambassador)
William & Humbert is one of the most renowned and historic Sherry houses, founded in 1877 by Alexander Williams and Arthur Humbert. Based in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, the winery has played a significant role in the development of the Sherry wine industry. William & Humbert is known for producing a wide range of traditional Sherries, including Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez.
One of their most famous products is the "Dry Sack" range of Sherries, especially their Dry Sack Medium, which is popular worldwide. William & Humbert also produces aged Sherries under the VOS (Very Old Sherry, over 20 years) and VORS (Very Old Rare Sherry, over 30 years) classifications, showcasing their expertise in long-aging wines.
In addition to Sherry, the bodega has diversified into producing brandies, with their Solera Gran Reserva, one of their premium offerings. The winery's focus is on combining traditional winemaking techniques with modern innovations to continue the legacy of producing high-quality Sherries. They are also deeply committed to sustainability and environmental preservation in their vineyards.
