About the Winemakers:
Alessandro Costa of Nino Costa:
Founded by the Costa family in 1851, this 7-hectare estate lies on a hilltop overlooking the village of Montá, to the west of the Tanaro River. This is the heart of the Roero, characterized by small, interweaving hills, yellow-ochre sandy soils full of marine fossils, and densely wooded areas dotted with vineyards. Winemaker Alessandro Costa cultivates the primary varieties of the Roero and the Langhe: Arneis, Nebbiolo, Favorita, and Brachetto; parents Nino and Gemma run the Azienda. All of the vineyards at the Costa estate are located within 1 mile from the newly built facility, an important factor in preserving the health of the grapes during harvest. They have adopted organic methods, using natural fertilizers, and no herbicides.
Luca Balbiano of Balbiano:
The history of Balbiano Winery begins in 1941 when its founder, Melchiorre Balbiano, decided to dedicate his life and work to the Freisa di Chieri: an indigenous variety in particular, of Turin. For over 80 years, the love for the wines of the Turin hills has been handed down from father to son: a heritage devoted to the continuous search for quality, the defense of traditions and the promotion of the fruits of this unique land. It is exactly this link that led the Balbiano family to courageously accept the challenge of reviving and replanting the royal urban vineyard of Villa della Regina in Turin, abandoned for almost 50 years since being bombed during WWII.
Massimo Negretti of Azienda Agricola Negretti:
The passion ‘della terra La Morra’ is palpable when speaking with brothers Ezio and Massimo Negretti. Getting their hands dirty in the vines and their work in the cellar gives them life and they are not at all hesitant to share that passion with us. The Negretti Winery as it is today was founded in 2002 however, the brothers are fourth generation wine growers and their respect for the traditions of their great-grandparents is evident in each bottle. La Morra, located in the north-west region of the DOC and known for producing a more elegant style of Barolo with its slightly sandier soil than other villages with a good amount of clay. A long stretch running north-south, facing east or south-east it’s one of the higher hills in the region. Wines from Rive (La Morra) tend to highlight this elegant style while wines from Bricco Abrogio (Roddi) are more powerful yet balanced.
